Originally developed by Mike and Coletta Maier in the late 1980's, the Palette/Panel Holder has helped to revolutionize painting in Plein Air by supplying the Artist with an easel option that is very lightweight and portable.  This is the main device that will attach to the ball head of any sturdy camera tripod.  The Palette/Panel Holder has been handmade in the USA for over 25 years and continues to offer the highest quality and most lightweight Plein Air solution that can be found on the market today.

Palette/Panel Holders are included with our Lightweight Kit and Pelican Case options or can be puchased separately below.

Three important features to consider when selecting a size of Palette/Panel Holder is the weight of the device, the panel holding capacity and the size of the palette mixing area.

Below is a list of features that are common to all FOUR sizes...

  • Our Palette/Panel Holders are handmade in the USA with a very high regard to quality.  The woods that we use are Black Walnut (the edges of the device) and Baltic Birch (the palette mixing area and panel holding surface).  All of the sliding hardware is handmade from solid brass and 1/8" thick aluminum.
  • All of our Palette/Panel Holders use our PATENTED spring arm system that will adjust to hold a wide variety of panel (or stretched canvas) sizes.  The adjustable spring arm is able to grip the left and right edges of the panel or canvas and suspend it in place while the Artist paints.
  • All of our Palette/Panel Holders will hold a panel (or canvas) that has a minimum dimension of 5 inches horizontal.  There is not any vertical limitation to panel height with our design.
  • The larger the Palette/Panel Holder size, the greater the palette mixing area and panel holding capacity it will have.  The spring arm that holds the panel in place is able to extend BEYOND the outer edges of the wood.  For example, our 12 X 16 size has a maximum panel holding capacity of 24 inches horizontal.
  • All of our Palette/Panel Holders will include one Side Palette Extension that can be attached to either the left or right side of the palette.  The Palette Extension serves as a shelf for brushes, palette cups or even more mixing area.
  • Every Palette/Panel Holder has a regular camera tripod fitting (1/4 inch, 20 thread count) on the underside of the palette that will attach to any standard (but sturdy) camera tripod.  This is the same fitting that is on the underside of most cameras.
  • We recommend that the Artist uses a tripod that has at least a 10 pound load capacity to the ball head and also a quick release plate. The higher load capacity helps with the sturdines of the Palette/Panel Holder. Many tripods on the market today have a quick release plate option. A quick release plate will screw into the tripod fitting that is on underside of the Palette/Panel Holder and then clip onto the ball head of the tripod. Having a quick release plate (which is specific to whatever tripod set up that is being used) will make attaching the Palette/Panel Holder onto the ball head of the tripod much easier.
  • We do repairs!  If the Palette/Panel Holder ever gets damaged in the field or needs an update after years of use, we simply ask our customers to pay for the original shipping charge to send the product to us and then the fix and return is free!  Some restrictions apply, so please contact us or view our FAQ's page to learn more about our repair policy.

PLEASE REMEMBER, WE ARE A SMALL SHOP THAT PRODUCES HANDMADE PRODUCTS.  DUE TO A HIGH DEMAND, ORDERS FOR OUR PALETTE/PANEL HOLDERS, LIGHTWEIGHT KITS AND PELICAN POCHADE BOXES WILL NOT BE SHIPPED UNTIL 4 - 5 WEEKS AFTER THE ORDER HAS BEEN PLACED.
